Design Service

It can be difficult to know where to start with your ironwork project but our project managers and designers are here to help. We’ll use our experience and creativity, along with the latest 3D-modelling software, to guide you effortlessly through all 4 stages of our design and development process.
Stage 1: Brief

When the Donkeywell Forge team receives your initial enquiry, our designers will start the creative process by gathering all the relevant information for your ironwork – including your desired dimensions, location, fixings and finish, along with your initial design thoughts.

Where relevant, we will then use our extensive archive of traditional ironwork designs, along with our own portfolio of work to refine a style and design for you that’s both historically accurate and period correct.

At the end of this initial stage, our team will have a good idea of how many elements will be involved in your design, what kind of process your project will require and how much time it will take us to complete.

Next, we’ll arrange and complete a site survey. We’ll take as many measurements and reference photos as possible and discuss design options with you.

We’ll then use the measurements and information we gather to sketch out our initial thoughts, which we’ll share and discuss with you before we progress to our CAD designs.

At this stage, we may even create a physical sample in the forge to show you exactly what your design might look like.

Our CAD designs and 3D-models are fantastic tools to help us bring the design process to life for you. So, we’ll use them for regular check-ins with you along the way.

To start with, we’ll chat with you to refine our CAD designs, until you’re happy to progress. Then, we’ll take your agreed design and use it to create a 3D-model to get all our specifications for engineering drawings we’ll need for assembly.

Finally, we’ll use this 3D-model to render into the reference images we took on site to give you a photo-realistic image of your design in situ; so you can confirm you’re happy to proceed with the production of your ironwork.

Once you’re happy with the drawings and renders of your project, we’ll issue the final drawings to our workshop and start on production.
